Rajahmundry: Officials aim to keep this Diwali incident-free and permitted the sale of fireworks at selected places to ensure safety of the public and local residents.

Fireworks traders have been asked to obtain temporary licence from the revenue authorities for sale of crackers to customers at select locations for the ensuing Diwali festival in the city.

Rajahmundry sub-collector C.M. Sai Kanth Varma held a meeting with traders and officials from revenue, police, fire, power and municipal corporation here on Thursday and instructed the traders to strictly comply with the safety norms during the sale of fireworks.

Speaking on the occasion, he stressed the need for traders to obtain temporary licence from the sub collector’s office who would be issuing such licences from October 29 to 31 between 10.00 am and 5.00 pm.

He asked the traders to obtain the licence by paying the fee so that they could be given permission to sell the fireworks from November 1. He said that permission to sell the fireworks was being given at 12 selected locations in the city.

The sub collector asked the officials from revenue, police, fire, power and municipal corporation to carry out joint inspection at the selected places to ensure that they were safe for sale of fireworks and would not likely be a cause for concern of an untoward incident to the public and asked them to submit a report.

Municipal commissioner Sumit Kumar Gandhi underlined the importance on the part of officials to keep close vigil on sale of fireworks. The business would be permitted at selected places and felt the need to ensure the safety of the general public and local residents.
